The Harghita Community Development Association (Visit Harghita) started the application process for the title in 2023, for which a consortium of 12 members from the region was formed.
From 6 to 11 October 2024, a seven-member jury from the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT) visited Harghita County to learn about the region, its gastronomy and other cultural features.
At the end of the visit, a press conference was held to announce that Harghita County has been recommended to be the European Region of Gastronomy in 2027. The final decision will be announced by IGCAT in December 2024.
