About

Ivan Viripajev, a prominent figure in contemporary drama, originally from Russia and currently residing in Poland, wrote one of his most influential and cult-status plays, Iranian Conference, in 2017. Since then, the play has been translated into numerous languages and staged in major theaters worldwide.

The title and setting of the play are symbolic: in Denmark’s capital, at the University of Copenhagen, a group of intellectuals gathers—an orientalist scholar and theologian, a political scientist and war correspondent, a TV host and writer, a pastor and conductor, and an Iranian poetess awarded the Nobel Prize for literature—to discuss the "Iranian problem" and express their views on human rights and freedom of speech, as well as the ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East. However, what starts as an academic conference takes an unexpected turn as the speakers’ differing worldviews and life experiences clash. Through intense dialogues and deeply personal, confessional monologues, the participants’ individual life stories and inner struggles come to light. In their quest to explore the causes and consequences of global cataclysms, the characters confront the opposition between Eastern and Western civilizations and ultimately face humanity’s fundamental question: what is the meaning of life?

The performance offers a profound spiritual journey, addressing themes such as freedom, faith, and happiness from multiple perspectives, encouraging the audience to confront the most pressing questions of our time and reflect on the state of our civilization.
