Fiddler on the Roof
About
The renowned musical Fiddler on the Roof has been performed on Broadway since 1964 and has become a piece that returns again and again to stages around the world. The story of this successful play is set in the small Ukrainian village of Anatevka at the beginning of the 1900s, during a historical period filled with suffering, and features characters with distinct traits. The often tragicomic, sometimes poignant tale splendidly presents a world striving to find balance between tradition and modernity—a story that still makes us ponder today.
Marc Chagall, the world-famous Jewish-Russian painter, created the figure of the bearded musician, who, swaying on the rooftops of a small village, gives voice to all the joys, dreams, sufferings, struggles, and vicissitudes of this small community. A fiddler on the roof! Pure madness, isn’t it? Yet, it embodies that risky beauty that captivates you, revealing the impossible, the unknown, and the absurd: it is like life itself.
Even though we could recount the story of Reb Tevye and his family in a multitude of ways, one thing is certain: their story is also our shared story, through which we look into the past and the future. It is an endless and serene love for life.
