Ugron Castle

Ugron Castle

About

Ugron Castle is located in the Western part of Filiaş, on the left bank of the Târnava Mare river.

The castle was built in several stages. In the 1500s there was a manor, which at the beginning of the 1600s changed and completed, the building gaining its current shape around 1820. The L-shaped building consists of a main wing and a gate building.

The most valuable part of the building is the main wing, built in the 17th century, especially the vaulted chapel of the corner bastion and the vaulted cellar, originally built for protection, as well as the structure of the Baroque roof from the early 1800s. The most valuable part of the gate building is most likely the part built in the 17th century, which contains the castle's vaulted gate.

The edifice belongs to the category A on the list of historical monuments in Romania. Part of the historical monument is the ruined barn, located next to the building. The heirs claimed the estate, the castle being sold in the family in 2005.

The current owners, Éva Ugron, as one of the descendants of the Ugron family, along with her husband, Miklós Maróty, decided to purchase and renovate the castle. With their financing, they managed to halt further deterioration of the castle in 2010 by completely renovating the roof structure, retiling it, and subsequently securing additional external funding for necessary improvements. Following the extensive renovations from 2021 to 2024, the castle will be open to the public, functioning as a hotel and event centre.
