 The Szeklers in Gheorgheni, due to the less suitable agricultural lands in the Gheorgheni basin, have leveraged the opportunities provided by the upper course of the Mureș River over the centuries. The timber from this area was transported by rafts to Sighișoara, Târgu Mureș, Rădăuți, Alba Iulia, Lipova, Arad, Mako, and Szeged. In the 18th century, a social division of labor developed within the rafting industry.
