Practices of Freedom: Mosaics in Miercurea-Ciuc

From the 1950s onwards, mosaic art experienced a revival in Romania, decorating public buildings, cultural centres, schools, cinemas, hotels and residential neighbourhoods.

Miercurea-Ciuc is home to four notable mosaics from this period, including Cantata profana (1967), created by András Gaál, Árpád Márton and Árpád Pálffy, and Liberation, an abstract composition by Márton Zsigmond, created between 1982 and 1993.

In her lecture, art historian Dr. Emese Pál explores these four works, their artistic characteristics, the political influences behind their creation and their place in Romanian art history.
